This Week in the Twin Tiers: Week of 11/9
The very nice weather we’ve had this weekend is starting to bleed over into Monday morning. Compared to our average high of 47 degrees and dropping fast, we’re holding 10-15 degrees above that. The fact that this warm weather has maintained itself over several days is an impressive feat, given the ever decreasing daylight; it’s mainly due to the establishment of a warm southerly flow that is pumping warm air up from the Southeast, though the clear skies have also helped matters. The question is, will it last?
The warm temperatures will indeed last a couple of more days. The sunny skies, unfortunately, will not. Clouds are approaching from the northwest attached to a slowly moving cold front. The clouds will begin to arrive this afternoon (though this morning will have some sun). Expect an afternoon high today in the mid-to-upper 60s, 20 degrees above average. Tonight, clouds will remain and temperatures will be in the mid-40s, a temperature we’d normally expect for a high, not a low.
On Tuesday, the cold front is expected to push through the area. The MOS forecasts are anticipating it to move through in the late afternoon and early evening hours, meaning we should continue to have the bulk of a good day. Temperatures will peak out somewhat cooler tomorrow afternoon, in the mid-50s. This cold front, however, is a dry cold front, and has very little in the way of precipitation (as of Monday morning, radar shows nothing, but convection and interaction with Hurricane Ida could increase its precipitation capabilities). Any precipitation is likely to remain well to our south, meaning it will remain dry for the foreseeable future. Tuesday night’s low will drop into the mid-30s.
As the cold front pushes past the area Tuesday night, enough of an inversion will form Wednesday to create the potential for fog. After that breaks it will be another sunny day and temperatures will hover around the 50 degree mark. Thursday and Friday are expected to also be in the 50-degree high range, sunny skies, and low temperatures in the mid-to-upper 30s.
