Rochester 8/31
A strong northwesterly flow behind a low pressure system over Montreal Sunday night has pushed unseasonably cool air into the northeast. Due to the very cold air aloft, a few showers developed and moved through the area Sunday bringing a few brief downpours for some locations. This will all soon come to an end as high pressure will be building over the Great Lakes on Monday and will literally anchor itself over our area welcoming in a extended period of dry weather and more seasonable temperatures.
Apparently today’s high temperature at the airport was 67° which I find hard to believe it was that “warm”. I myself spent a good portion of the day outdoors on Sunday and I was still a bit chilly donning a hoodie.
Speaking of chilly, Sunday night will be downright chilly for this time of the year. Just about everyone tonight will see temperatures drop down to 50° or below. Of course, the only exception is for those near lake Ontario where lake waters are still in the low 70s, so lows much higher there.. Lake temps in the 70s still you say? Hold that thought… Some of our lower lying valleys south of the Truway will drop well into the 40s tonight.
So 50° air crossing over water temperatures in the low 70s, sounds like it’s time to brush the dust off of the lake effect forecasting skills… In fact, I should have last night because both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario had a well defined band of lake effect rain NE of each lake Sunday morning. With a northwest wind expected Sunday night, I don’t see anything organized forming, but a few passing showers well east of Rochester mainly over Wayne County are possibly anytime from 3am-8am.
Outside of a few morning clouds and a few sprinkles as outlined above, partly to mostly sunny skies will dominate on Monday. Another cool day ahead, but it will feel much warmer with the sunshine. Highs will reach the upper 60s.
